O umbuzeiro era muito utilizado pelos cangaceiros, principalmente, como alimentação (frutos/batata/água).

Raspavam as batatas do umbu, com um raspador feito de osso da pá do boi. A casca dos tubérculos servia de panela. Eram consistentes.
Era a fruta sagrada do sertanejo. Os cangaceiros chupavam o umbu que saciava a fome e a sede. Adicionado ao leite, preparava-se a umbuzada (vitamina do sertanejo).
